KASHMIR: AR rupee (10.74g), Srinagar, VS1917, Y-13, bold strike, with the English letters JHS on reverse, bold AU. It is speculated that the JNS initials represent the Christogram JHS (or IHS), a Latin acronym for Jesus Honinum Salvator – Jesus Savior of Mankind. Reportedly, a Brahmin by the name of Anand in the Dogra court converted to Christianity and then persuaded the Raja to engrave these letters on his coins as a way to please the British and to bring good fortune to the king.
