BALI: cash coin amulet, known locally as tamiang ("shield"), comprising a 25cm-wide circular frame, attached to hundreds of cash coins (almost all from the Qing Dynasty, but also a few Ming and Song Dynasties, as well as Vietnam and Japan) forming a 13-point disk in the center and a ring around the frame, further attached with five mirrors in a star-shaped pattern in the center, and 13 tassels made of coins, beads, and red cloth, probably made around the mid-20th century, small crack in left mirror, a lovely ethnographic item! XF. Tamiang, which means "shield" in the Balinese language, is a large round amulet with radiate patterns. Traditionally, it is hung in homes on the local Hindu festival of Kuningan Day as a talisman to protect oneself from evil energy and negative thoughts. It is traditionally made with palm leaves or East Asian cash coins (known locally as pis bolong), which circulated in Bali for centuries and was still in use well after the introduction of the rupiah.
