BORNEO: He Shun Gongsi, tin cash (5.51g), cf. Zeno-251900, Millies--, Yi & de Kreek--, 29mm, he shun shi si // retrograde imitative Manchu mintmark boo gui, light discoloration, extremely rare, Choice VF. He Shun Gongsi was established in 1776 when 14 smaller mining societies (gongsi) united into one federation. While coins bearing the name He Shun Gong Si are somewhat common (Yih & de Kreek-20), these are the first examples with He Shun Shi Si that we have encountered, as we can find no other examples beside Zeno-251900. It is unclear which organization within the federation issued this peculiar type, though the title shi si ("envoy") was commonly used in China during the Ming Dynasty to describe a high-ranking military or civilian official dispatched by the central government to a locality. Hence, this suggests the issuer of this coin had an analogous function within the He Shun federation.
