BORNEO: Lin Tian Gongsi, tin cash (6.95g), ca. 1780-1825, Millies--, Yih & de Kreek--, Zeno--, Chinese legends lin tian gong si (lim tian kong si in Hakka) // two interlocking diamonds to left and right, unpublished and extremely rare, Choice VF. Lin Tian Kongsi was established ca. 1780 by Chinese miners from Montrado in western Borneo. In 1825 it was forced to join the He Shun federation and abandon its name. While coins bearing the name of this gongsi are well known, none are known with the diamond design on the present example. The same pattern also appears on the reverse of membership tokens of the Golden Coin Society, a later Chinese secret society active in Zhejiang and Fujian active 1858-62 (see our Auction 51, Lot 1531). It is unclear whether there is a connection between these two types or that the similarity is purely coincidental.
