IMPORTANT NOTE - The Buyer's Premium is now $20 per lot or 20% of the hammer price, whichever amount is greater. However, we have also reduced opening bids on lower value items to adjust for the new Buyer's Premium structure, so all-in costs are still very close to what they were in the past. This change in fee structure will allow us to continue to offer coins valued at less than $100 in addition to our higher value offerings. Contact us with any questions.
INDONESIA: JAVA: AE gobog (18.20g), Cribb-1 (rev) / 36 (rev), Series 1, noble woman walking right, cage to right, spinning wheel above, rice cone and rice trough below // male servant and noble woman standing vis-à-vis, jar and crescent above, rice barn between coin and jar below, a well-made example, old slash on reverse, accompanied by collector tag, Choice VF, ex Jürgen M. Wilmes Collection. Magic coins (known locally as gobog) have been made in Java and nearby areas since the late 13th century. Older examples, usually about 35-40mm, resemble the shape of Chinese cash coins. These often depict domestic scenes with various human figures and household objects in the style of the Javanese shadow puppetry (wayang). Rather than having a monetary value, they were made as amulets to expel evil and bring good fortune to the bearer.
