INDONESIA: SAMUDRA-PASAI: Mumin, early 16th century, AR unit (0.33g), cf. Leyten-SP20 (gold), Zeno-, mumin / malik al-za- / hir (inverted) // al-sultan / al-`adil, two edge chips, unpublished in silver, possible contemporary imitation, VF-XF. Leyten speculates that Mumin was the final ruler of Samudra-Pasai before its conquest by Aceh on account of his coins being the lightest in the entire series. The present example is possibly a contemporary imitation due to its crude and inverted calligraphy, though the use of silver suggests an official origin. There is little published information on the silver and base-metal coinage of Samudra, but the recent emergence of examples in auctions and private collections hint at a functional, if limited, multi-metallic currency system.
