SULAWESI: Anonymous, lead pitis (1.26g), ca. 16th-17th century, Zeno--, sultan / ... ... / fi zaman ("In the time of Sultan ...") // masruf / hadha al-balad / rasas ("small tin-lead money of this city"), VF. This is the only example of this type we have encountered anywhere. The two unread words, the second of which ends in a qaf, do not appear to be Arabic and could be a name in Buginese, which is spoken in South Sulawesi and used qaf in the local version of the Jawi script to indicate the word-final glottal stop (e.g. Luwu' was spelled luwuq). The color of the metal and the inscriptional format also strongly suggest this coin was issued in this area. More research is needed to provide a reading for the two words.
