SUMATRA: tin wafer (20.34g), ca. 11th-13th century, 264 x 17mm, with etched two-line inscriptions (apparently in Tamil or Grantha, and clearly not Kawi or Javanese), uniface, light oxidation in some areas, a lovely example with clear and complete inscriptions, XF. The use of Tamil is peculiar for this region though not surprising, as merchants from southern India have long visited the Malay Archipelago for its spices and incense. The Chola Empire in particular conducted both trade and raids on the wealthy Srivijaya Empire, culminating in the sack of its capital Palembang and the capture of its king, Sangrama Vijayatunggavarman. This piece was perhaps issued by one of the Tamil merchants in the area.
