IRELAND: Free State, 6 pence / 1 reul, 1928, KM-5, S-6628, Cláirseach (Gaelic harp) // Irish Wolfhound, PCGS graded Proof 65, ex Almer Orr III Collection. The Irish word reul or réal means "sixpence" and is derived from the Spanish word real. The sixpence was a pre-decimal Irish coin worth 1/40 of a pound or 1/2 of a shilling. The variant spelling reul was used in the Coinage Act of 1926, and appeared on coins even after the 1947 spelling reform established réal as the standard.
