On the initiative of La Marmora a new sniper corps under the name '82 Bersaglieri' was set up in 1836 by order of Charles Albert of Sardinia. Alessandro La Marmora participated in the Battle of Goito in 1848. In the March campaign in 1849 he served as chief of staff of the Sardinian troops under Albert Chrzanowski, which were defeated at Mortara and Novara against the Austrians. In 1855, La Marmora participated as a division commander in the Crimean War, where he died on June 7, 1855 of cholera.
