ITALY: AE medal, Commemorative Medal for Military Operations in East Africa (Medaglia Commemorativa delle Operazioni Militari in Africa Orientale), with original ribbon with gladius clasp and star, XF, ex Joseph E. Lang Collection. Established in 1936 by the Kingdom of Italy, this medal was awarded to military and civilian personnel who participated in the Italian conquest of Ethiopia and subsequent operations in East Africa between 1935 and 1936. The front of the medal features the left-facing profile of King Victor Emmanuel III. The circular inscription reads "VITT EM III RE D'ITALIA IMP DI ETIOPIA," which translates to "Victor Emmanuel III, King of Italy, Emperor of Ethiopia". The reverse depicts a mountainous African landscape with a fasces in the left foreground, inscribed "AFRICA ORIENTALE" and "MOLTI NEMICI. MOLTO ONORE." (Many enemies, much honor). The gladius clasp and star were often added to indicate specific periods of service or combat.
