ITALY: Vittorio Emanuele III, 1900-1946, AE medal, Italo-German Campaign Medal in Africa (Medaglia commemorativa della campagna italo-tedesca in Africa / Medaille für den Italienisch-Deutschen Feldzug in Afrika), with original ribbon of issue, XF, ex Joseph E. Lang Collection. This is a military decoration instituted by the Italian government in 1942. It was created to recognize the joint Axis military operations in North Africa, specifically honoring the achievements of the German Afrika Korps (DAK) serving under General Erwin Rommel. The obverse depicts two heavily stylized gladiators (representing Germany and Italy) working together to forcibly close the jaws of a crocodile (symbolizing the British Empire). The reverse features the central image of the Arch of Fileni (Arco dei Fileni), a landmark monument that stood in Libya. The arch is flanked on the left by the Italian Fascist fasces emblem and on the right by the Nazi swastika. At the very bottom sits the Royal Knot of the House of Savoy. Inscription: The text around the border reads "Campagna Italo-Tedesca in Africa" in Italian and "Italienisch-Deutscher Feldzug in Afrika" in German. This medal was awarded primarily to German military personnel who served in North Africa. It was designed by the Italian artist Roberto De Marchis and manufactured by Lorioli Milano. The ribbon combines the national colors of both nations, featuring stripes of green, white, and red (Italy) and black, white, and red (Germany).
