JAPAN: AE badge, The Wound Railway Personnel Badge (Shoi Tetsudo jin sho) badge, with original paulownia wooden case of issue, XF, ex Joseph E. Lang Collection. The Wound Railway Personnel Badge was awarded to railroad employees who sustained an injury or wound while in public service or in a non-combat situation related to their work on the railway. This type of award is comparable to the Japanese military's "Wounded Soldier Badge" which had two varieties: one for combat wounds and a silver version for wounds or injuries sustained during public service, such as accidents or illness. Therefore, a railway employee might receive this specific badge for events such as: Injuries resulting from an equipment accident on the job, contracting a serious disease like malaria while on duty or wounds or injuries sustained in the line of duty under non-combat circumstances.
