JAPAN: AE medal (1111.65g), 56mm bronze medal for Lieutenant Commander Hirose Takeo, Hero of the Battle of Port Arthur; crossed Japanese National and Naval flags behind large anchor // poem by Takeo, Shichisho hokoku ichi shi kokoro ken sai-ki seiko gansho-jo fune in four lines of Kanji, with original velvet cord central hanger, XF, RR, ex Joseph E. Lang Collection. Hirose Takeo (1868- 1904) was a career officer in the Imperial Japanese Navy. He commanded the cargo vessel Fukui Maru during the Battle of Port Arthur in the Russo-Japanese War. The ship was hit by coastal artillery, and despite being wounded, he drowned while looking for other survivors of the sinking, going down with his ship. His selfless sacrifice elevated him to the status of a deified national hero. Lieutenant Commander Hirose Takeo wrote a famous death poem (jisei) before boarding the Fukui Maru for the Port Arthur blockade on March 26, 1904. It expresses his resolve to die for his country: Shichisho hokoku ichi shi kokoro ken sai-ki seiko gansho-jo fune (Seven lives to repay the nation, one death ensures a firm heart, again aiming for success, I board the ship with a smile).
