JAPAN: AE medal, The 1900 Boxer War Medal, with original ribbon and paulownia wooden box with gold lettering, AU, ex Joseph E. Lang Collection. The 1900 Japanese Boxer War Medal or the China Relief Expedition Medal (Jugun kisho) was instituted by Imperial Edict No. 142 on April 21, 1901, to honor Japanese forces participating in the Eight-Nation Alliance. It recognized service of Imperial Japanese Army and Navy personnel who participated in the relief of foreign legations in Beijing during the Boxer Rebellion. The obverse features the Imperial chrysanthemum crest and phoenix, with Jugun kisho (War Medal) in Kanji, while the reverse displays "Empire of Great Japan, 33rd year of Meiji" in Kanji.
