JAPAN: AE medal, The 1894–95 Sino-Japanese War Medal, with original clasp and ribbon, XF, ex Joseph E. Lang Collection. The 1894–95 Sino-Japanese War Medal was established by the Empire of Japan to honor participants of the First Sino-Japanese War, marking the first time Japanese medals used hook and eyelet ribbon mounts. It was awarded to all military personnel, including laborers and nurses, who served during the conflict (August 1, 1894 to April 17, 1895). It was made from bronze captured from Chinese cannons during the conflict. The obverse displays an Imperial Japanese Army regiment flag crossed with a naval ensign, topped by the Chrysanthemum Seal of the Emperor. And the reverse features a central inscription reading "War Medal" (Jugun Kisho) at center with the text "Meiji 27-28 Year" (Meiji ni ju nana hachi-nen) in the outer legend. The war was fought between Qing Dynasty China and Meiji Japan, primarily over control of Korea. After more than six months of continuous successes by the Japanese army and naval forces, as well as the loss of the Chinese port of Weihai, the Qing leadership sued for peace in February 1895. China also lost suzerainty over Korea and ceded Taiwan and the Penghu Islands to Japan after signing the unequal Treaty of Shimonoseki two months later, ending the war.
