JAPAN: AE medal, The 1914-1915 War Medal, with original clasp and ribbon, XF, ex Joseph E. Lang Collection. The Japanese 1914-1920 War Medal, instituted on November 6, 1915, by Imperial Edict No. 203, is a blackened bronze medal honoring Imperial forces who served in WWI and related operations, including the 1914 capture of the German colony of Tsingtau (Qing Dao in Chinese) from Germany, seizing German Pacific island colonies between 1914 and 1915 and participating in Mediterranean naval patrols. The obverse features crossed flags of the Imperial Japanese Army and Navy, with a 16-petaled imperial chrysanthemum crest above, surrounded by paulownia leaves below. And the reverse features Japanese kanji characters indicating the service period with the 1914-1915 version reads "Taisho 3 to 4 Years War."
