JAPAN: AE medal, The Second China Incident Medal (Sina jihen jugun kisho), with clasp, ribbon, and case with gold lettering, XF, ex Joseph E. Lang Collection. The China Incident Medal was created by Imperial Edict No. 496 on July 27, 1939 and was awarded for service in China at any time from the 12th through the 20th years of the Showa period (1937–1945). An amendment was promulgated by Imperial Edict No. 418 in 1944 and the decoration was abolished in 1946 by government ordinance No. 177.The medal features the creature yata-no-karasu (a mythical three-legged crow), symbolizing divine guidance, superimposed over crossed Imperial Army and Navy flags, with the Imperial chrysanthemum crest at the top. The reverse depicts a landscape of mountains, clouds, and the sea, representing the areas of conflict in China, with four Kanji characters reading "Shi-na ji-hen" (China Incident).
