JAPAN: AE medal, The 1931-1934 China Incident Medal (Manchurian Incident Medal), with original clasp, ribbon and case of issue, XF, ex Joseph E. Lang Collection. The Japanese Manchurian Incident Medal was established on July 23, 1934, by the Imperial Japanese government to commemorate the military campaign carried out between 1931 and 1934 in Manchuria following the Mukden Incident. This event, which occurred on September 18, 1931, was an attack orchestrated by Japanese officers on the South Manchurian Railway, used as a pretext to justify the Kwantung Army's invasion of the region. The resulting occupation led to the creation of the puppet state of Manchukuo in 1932, consolidating the Japanese presence in northeast China. The obverse features a 16-petaled Imperial Chrysanthemum Crest at the top, with a golden kite (a mythical bird from Japanese legend) resting on a traditional Japanese shield and the reverse depicts army and navy helmets against a background of cherry blossoms, with an inscription referencing the "Showa 6th year to 9th year" (1931–1934).
