JAPAN: AR badge, The Imperial Japanese Soldiers' Relief Association (Teikoku Gunjin Koenkai) badge, with original pin back, ribbon and lacquered case of issue with gold lettering, AU, ex Joseph E. Lang Collection. The Imperial Soldiers' Relief Association badge was also widely known as the "Three-legged Raven" or "Yatagarasu" badge and was issued in Japan before and during WWII. The central image features the Yatagarasu, a three-legged crow from Japanese mythology that is a divine messenger and symbol of guidance, often associated with the sun goddess Amaterasu. The six-pointed star above the crow is a military symbol, and the red background represents patriotism. The enameled silver badge has an inscription on the reverse and has a silver hallmark. The Imperial Soldiers' Relief Association (or Soldier's Bereaved Families Relief Association) badge was established on January 5, 1896.
