JAPAN: AR medal, Meiji Emperor 25th Wedding Anniversary Commemorative Medal, with original ribbon, AU, RR, ex Joseph E. Lang Collection. The Meiji Emperor 25th Wedding Anniversary Medal was created to commemorate the wedding anniversary of the Meiji Emperor. At the Royal Banquet ceremony held on the day of the official 25th Royal Wedding Anniversary, March 9, 1894, it has been reported that about 100 'Foreign' guests were invited from amongst the Tokyo Diplomatic Community, and were seated at the table of the Meiji Emperor & his wife, comprising 'Heads of Mission' and their wives from 13 countries & accompanied by 57 of their diplomatic staff. The obverse of the medal features two cranes and branches of wisteria and bamboo, which are symbols of good fortune, longevity, health, and fidelity in Japanese culture. The reverse has in four lines, Daikon Nijuugo Shuunen (25th Wedding Anniversary) / Shukuten no Sho (Commemorative Medal) / Dai Nippon Teikoku (Empire of Great Japan) / Meiji Nijuushichi-nen Sangatsu (March, 27th Year of Meiji [1894]). This is the rarest silver issue amongst all 'Commemorative' Japanese medal issues, with only an estimated 1301 silver medals issued.
