JAPAN: AR order, The Order of the Rising Sun (Kyokujitsu-sho), 7th Class, with original ribbon, lapel pin, and lacquered case of issue with gold lettering, Unc, ex Joseph E. Lang Collection. The Order of the Rising Sun was the first national decoration awarded by the Japanese government and was created on April 10, 1875 by decree of the Council of State during the early Meiji era. The Order was originally awarded in nine classes and prior to the end of World War II, it was awarded for exemplary military service. The Order was awarded to people who have rendered distinguished service to the state in various fields. The design of the Rising Sun symbolizes energy as powerful as the rising sun in parallel with the "rising sun" concept of Japan ("Land of the Rising Sun").
