JAPAN: AV kin kwan (15.65g), Opitz pg. 280, Munro pg. 5, 19mm, "gold ring money"; a lovely example that appears to be made in pure gold, not gilt as usual, deacquisition from the former Money Museum of the National Bank of Detroit, VF, RR, ex Charles Opitz Collection. Various forms of ring money were used in Eastern Asia, including Japan, for at least 2,500 years; usually made of hollow copper with a thin layer of gold (kin) or silver (gin) applied to the outside surfaces; an intriguing piece which is sure to delight the advanced collector of Japanese numismatics or primitive money.
