JAPAN: AV kin kwan (8.55g), ND (ca. 2000 BC-400 AD), Opitz page 280; Munro page 5, 21mm, "Gold Ring Money" gilt copper ring; the gilt appears somewhat thin in places, allowing for verdigris to envelop approximately eighty percent of the surface, F-VF, ex Coin Galleries Auction, April 2002, Lot 1315. Various forms of ring money were used in Eastern Asia, including Japan, for at least 2,500 years; usually made of hollow copper with a thin layer of gold (kin) or silver (gin) applied to the outside surfaces; an intriguing piece which is sure to delight the advanced collector of Japanese numismatics or primative money.
