JAPAN: AV kin kwan (8.72g), Opitz page-280; Munro page-5, 20mm, "gold ring money" gilt copper ring; the gilt appears somewhat thin in places, allowing for verdigris to envelop approximately eighty percent of the surface, VF, ex Charles Opitz Collection. Various forms of ring money were used in Eastern Asia, including Japan, for at least 2,500 years; usually made of hollow copper with a thin layer of gold (kin) or silver (gin) applied to the outside surfaces; an intriguing piece which is sure to delight the advanced collector of Japanese numismatics or primitive money.
