JAPAN: Genbun, 1736-1741, AR mameita-gin (9.29g), H-9.40c, JNDA-09-66, so-called "bean money", with mint official name joze left of Daikoku, the God of Wealth, with character bun within and many small characters bun in the fields, most of design off flan as usual for type, in .460 fine silver, struck 1736-1818, VF. The Japanese "mameita-gin," also known as "bean money," is made from silver alloys using the "yudoko-buki" method: molten metal is poured into a cloth (such as linen) submerged in hot water. The designs were hammered into the cooling silver. "Mameita gin" were produced from around 1620 until the 1850s. The weight of the produced coins varied considerably, and they were used more like bullion rather than units of account.
