JAPAN: Genroku, 1688-1704, AR mameita-gin (6.28g), H-9.13, Daikoku, the God of Wealth, either side with character gen within, struck 1695-1706 at Kyoto and Edo mints, VF to EF. The years of Genroku are generally considered to be the Golden Age of the Edo period. The previous century of peace in Japan had created relative economic stability. There were unanticipated consequences when the shogunate debased the quality of coins as a strategy for financing the appearance of continuing Genroku affluence. This miscalculation instantly led to inflation.
