Japan stopped producing its own national currency in 958 due to severe economic issues, including hyperinflation, the drastic debasement of the coins' value, and a widespread loss of confidence in the monetary system. The final issue, called Kengen Taiho, was of extremely low quality, leading the government to abandon the currency system in favor of a return to a barter economy based on rice and cloth. The Japanese goverment did not produce its own coins again for roughly 500 years.
