JAPAN: Kammu, 781-806, AE mon (3.1g), H-1.20, JNDA-122.23, ryuhei eiho, large flan, cast 796-818, graded 86 by CAG (Ceres Appraisal Guarantee Co.), VF-XF. Japan stopped producing its own national currency in 958 due to severe economic issues, including hyperinflation, the drastic debasement of the coins' value, and a widespread loss of confidence in the monetary system. The final issue, called Kengen Taiho, was of extremely low quality, leading the government to abandon the currency system in favor of a return to a barter economy based on rice and cloth. The Japanese goverment did not produce its own coins again for roughly 500 years.
