IMPORTANT NOTE - The Buyer's Premium is now $20 per lot or 20% of the hammer price, whichever amount is greater. However, we have also reduced opening bids on lower value items to adjust for the new Buyer's Premium structure, so all-in costs are still very close to what they were in the past. This change in fee structure will allow us to continue to offer coins valued at less than $100 in addition to our higher value offerings. Contact us with any questions.
JAPAN: Keio, 1865-1868, AE 50 mon (12.02g), Hosogaya mint in Mito, Hitachi Province, H-7.4, 35mm, type known as a Mito Tora-sen (Mito Tiger Coin), cast in bronze, minor natural casting defect, VF-XF. Legend in seal script translates as "Enrich the Country and Strengthen the Military." Cast at the Hosogaya Mito, Hitachi Province (present day Ibaraki-ken). The original cast in 1864 in iron was a local emergency coin used to pay the workmen at the financially troubled copper coin mint in Mito. In 1867 copper-alloy was cast supposedly from bronze cannon which the daimyo (local feudal lord) had made out of temple bells with which to repel the western barbarians.
