JAPAN: Kofun Period, circa 300-538 AD, LOT of 6 Japanese magatamas of various sizes and colors measuring 54mm (ex Money Museum of the National Bank of Detroit), 41mm, 36mm, 24mm, 23mm, and 17mm, a wonderful group of these rarely offered items, retail value $1000, lot of 6 items, ex Charles Opitz Collection. Magatamas are gem-stone carvings, resembling the claw of a tiger or similar animal. These were valuable trade items, but perhaps not used as currency. However, magatamas are included in most money museums.
