JAPAN: LOT of 25 coins, a group of scarce mint mark types of Japanese Kan'ei Tsuho coins including Sado mint type (7) and Ashio mint (18), average circulated examples, retail value $250, lot of 25 coins. Kan'ei Tsuho coins were minted at the Sado Mint (Sado-za) starting in 1636, playing a key role in standardizing Japan's currency during the early Edo period. Sado Island was chosen due to its extensive gold and silver mines, which provided the necessary copper, iron, and precious metals for coin production. The Ashio mint was located in Shimotsuke Province, and was one of the key production sites for Kan'ei Tsuho copper coins during the Edo period. It was established to utilize the high-quality copper from the nearby Ashio Copper Mine and it began minting these standardized coins in the mid-17th century to support the Tokugawa shogunate's currency reforms.
