JAPAN: LOT of 27 coins, so-called "bean money", a variety of eras and periods, ranging in weight from .22g to 14.28g, a very interesting study lot inlcuding several of the smallest examples we have encountered, most of design off flan as usual for type, average quality examples, retail value $800lot of 27 coins. The Japanese "mameita-gin," also known as "bean money," is made from silver alloys using the "yudoko-buki" method: molten metal is poured into a cloth (such as linen) submerged in hot water. The designs were hammered into the cooling silver. "Mameita gin" were produced from around 1620 until the 1850s. The weight of the produced coins varied considerably, and they were used more like bullion rather than units of account.
