JAPAN: Meiji, 1868-1912, AE medal (74.24g), year 27 (1894), 54mm bronze medal commemorating the Meiji Emperor and Empress' 25th Anniversary of Marriage; two Ho-o (Japanese phoenixes) facing each other, holding wisteria branches in their beaks; a stylized Imperial Chrysanthemum crest rests between them at the top; the entire scene is encircled by a highly ornate border of repeating floral patterns // inscription in Tensho Kyujitai script in columns, small spot, AU. This is the official Japanese Imperial Commemorative Medal for the 25th Wedding Anniversary of Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken. Issued on March 9, 1894 (Meiji 27). It celebrates Japan's first Western-style royal "Silver Wedding" anniversary.
