JAPAN: Mutsuhito, 1867-1912, AR yen, Osaka, Meiji 21 (1888), Y-28a.2, c/m gin at left, Extremely Fine. In 1897, Japan demonetized the silver one yen and trade dollar coins, and many were melted to provide bullion from which to produce subsidiary coins. However, some 20 million trade dollar and one yen coins were countermarked with the character gin; meaning silver, and shipped to Taiwan, Korea and Southern Manchuria in China for use in circulation there.
