JAPAN: RYUKYUS:H-6.26, Zuroku Nihon no kahei, Bank of Japan Volume 4, #338, roughly 110mm long, "Japanese Pigeon Eye Money" or hatome sen, about 120 pieces of small change coins all bound together, each coin approximately 10mm in diameter without inscription, VF, RR, ex Charles Opitz Collection. Reportedly minted by Toma Pekumi Juchin, a former Japanese samurai of Satsuma Domain during the Edo period, and later bureaucrat of Ryukyu Kingdom. After Satsuma 's invasion of Ryukyu in 1609, the Ryukyukan people became much poorer. The Ryukyu Government had to borrow money from the Satsuma (Kagoshima) Domain, but the debt grew and the Ryukyu Kingdom was unable to pay it off. Toma Juchin minted the Hatome-sen "pigeon-eye coins" in 1656.
