IMPORTANT NOTE - The Buyer's Premium is now $20 per lot or 20% of the hammer price, whichever amount is greater. However, we have also reduced opening bids on lower value items to adjust for the new Buyer's Premium structure, so all-in costs are still very close to what they were in the past. This change in fee structure will allow us to continue to offer coins valued at less than $100 in addition to our higher value offerings. Contact us with any questions.
JAPAN: Ryukyus: Sho Tai, 1848-1879, AE 100 mon (20.46g), H-6.28, JNDA-138.1, VF. These coins were minted in the Ryukyu era year 2-3 (1862-63) by the Shimazu clan at Isonohama, near Kagoshima, the political center for Satsuma and also for the Ryukyu. Ryukyu traders and emissaries frequented the city, and a special Ryukyu embassy building was established there. The coins were originally intended for trade with the Ryukyu, but apparently were little used there. It is said that their production was a smokescreen to hide the production of illegal Tempo Tsuho value 100 coins.
