JAPAN: Showa, 1926-1989, AE medal, year 10 (1935), as Zeno-194346, 55mm, depiction of the 14th century samurai Kusunoki Masashige on horseback // banner with five characters, indicating the phrase "Right triumphs over Wrong, Law triumphs over Right, Power triumphs over Law, Heaven triumphs over Power " or alternatively "no man can oppose the divine ", Japan Mint in Tokyo hallmark below on reverse, EF. Kusunoki Masashige was a samurai in the 14th-century who served Emperor Go-Daigo in the Genko War. The Genko war was a civil war that led to the fall of the Kamakura shogunate. Masahige's role in this conflict is now regarded as the ideal of samurai loyalty. He posthumously received the highest decoration from the Meiji government of Japan in 1880. A statue in this same style and design (quite likely the exact statue depicted on the obverse) is located near the Imperial Palace in Tokyo.
