JAPAN: Sino-Japanese War Medal, AE medal, 1894-1895, The 1894-1895 Sino-Japanese War Medal, with original clasp and ribbon, cleaned, XF. The 1894-95 Sino-Japanese War Medal was awarded in commemoration of the First Sino–Japanese War, which lasted from 1 August 1894 to 17 April 1895. The war was fought between Qing Dynasty China and Meiji Japan, primarily over control of Korea. After more than six months of continuous successes by the Japanese army and naval forces, as well as the loss of the Chinese port of Weihai and Province of Taiwan, the Qing leadership sued for peace in February 1895. The\obverse displays a 16-petal chrysanthemum crest (the Imperial seal) above a crossed naval ensign and army regiment flag, flanked by laurel and paulownia leaves while the reverse features Japanese characters in the center reading "War Medal" (jugun kisho) and along the edge, "Meiji 27-28 Year" for the years 1894-1895. This medal was famously struck from 53 cannons captured from Chinese forces (reputedly American manufactured) and melted down and processed at the Osaka mint.
