JAPAN: Taisho, 1912-1926, AE plaque (114.77g), year 13 (1924), 77x61mm bronze plaque commemorating the Marriage of Crown Prince Hirohito and Princess Nagako (the later Emperor Showa and Empress Kojun) on January 26, 1924, portraits of the prince and princess, chrysanthemum seal above, inscription "to commemorate the Wedding of His Highness (the Crown Prince of) the Togu Palace" below // two entwined trees (a traditional symbol of marriage) with date between, inscription "(high in the sky) hang the sun and moon" (about the wedding of Prince and Princess) to right, and "five stars (looking like) the necklace of pearls" to left, Japan Mint hallmark on bottom edge, XF. Japanese commemorative plaques are rarely encountered. The obverse was engraved by the renowned sculptor and medalist, Shoukichi Hata, and the reverse was engraved by Iwao Sato, master engraver and medalist who worked for the Japan Mint (Zoheikyoku). He is celebrated in Japanese exonumia for his intricate die-sinking and commemorative medal designs.
