JAPAN: Tenmei, 1781-1789, AE mon, Ishinomaki mint, Mutsu Province, H-6.31, JNDA-139.8, sendai tsuho (Sendai currency), cast 1784-87, copper bosen (seed or mother) coin for the iron type, graded 82 by CAG Grading Company, VF. This iron square coin was cast at the Ishinomaki Mint in Mutsu Province between the 4th and 7th years of Tenmei. 308,000 strings of this coin were issued. The quality of the iron coinage was so bad that it was said if they were carried in a bag for one day it would be torn, and out of a hundred coins, two or three would be broken. The use of this coin was strictly prohibited outside of the province. The mother coins in bronze for this type are usually of high quality.
