JAPAN: Tenpo, 1830-1844, AR chogin (145.07g), Edo Mint, H-9.50, Cr-9b, JNDA-09-68, with character po stamped at both ends, 0.260 fine silver, struck 1837-58, Choice VF. Cho-gin were various silver ingots shaped like a sea cucumber which did not have a face value but were a silver-by-weight standard in which the value was decided by the weight. This was the same for the various sizes of Mameita-gin as well. These types carried the Japanese-era name at the time of manufacture stamped on the coins.
