KASHMIR: AR "kham" rupee (10.75g), Srinagar, VS1909 (1852), Y-13, initials JHS below cross on reverse, accompanied by collector's information card, VF, ex Anton Holt Collection. It is speculated that the JNS initials represent the Christogram JHS (or IHS), a Latin acronym for Jesus Honinum Salvator – Jesus Savior of Mankind. Reportedly, a Brahmin by the name of Anand in the Dogra court converted to Christianity and then persuaded the Raja to engrave these letters on his coins as a way to please the British and to bring good fortune to the king.
