KASHMIR: Ranbir Singh, 1857-1885, AR rupee (6.94g), Srinagar, VS1929/VS1929 (1872), Y-16b, bilingual type, initials JHS below on obverse, attractive light toning, XF, ex Anton Holt Collection. It is speculated that the JNS initials represent the Christogram JHS (or IHS), a Latin acronym for Jesus Honinum Salvator – Jesus Savior of Mankind. Reportedly, a Brahmin by the name of Anand in the Dogra court converted to Christianity and then persuaded the Raja to engrave these letters on his coins as a way to please the British and to bring good fortune to the king.
