KEDAH: 'Awaluddin', ca. late 17th century, AR unit (5.09g), cf. SS-12 (Kedah), unpublished type, citing the unknown al-sultan awwal al-din on obverse, and mukarram shah on reverse, followed by khallada allah mulkahu, both sides within a border of dots, some porosity and surface deposits, VF, RRRR. This is the same ruler whose name appears on a unique unpublished AE tra (SARC Auction 41, Lot 1445), and the two coins have the same inscriptions and layout. There seems to be some affinity between them and the issues of Sultan Zia'uddin al-Mukarram Shah of Kedah (1661-1687) due to their similar calligraphic style and use of the title Mukarram Shah. We thus tentatively assign this example to Kedah, though there is no ruler with the title Awaluddin in the history of Kedah to our knowledge.
