KHANS OF YARKAND: Sa'id Khan, 1514-1533, AR tanka (4.46g), NM, ND, A-S3009, obverse design derived from contemporary Shaybanid tankas, the reverse from the common tankas of the Timurid Sultan Husayn; about 30% flat strike, VF, RRR. Sa'id Khan founded the Khanate of Yarkand (in Xinjiang province, China) in 1514, and quickly moved its capital to Kashghar. He was the only member of the dynasty, which survived at Yarkand for nearly 300 years, to strike coins in silver, but a few examples have recently been discovered. Later coins of the Khanate of Yarkand are excruciatingly crude copper coins (types E3008-H3008).
