KHAZRUNID: Wanudin b. Khazrun, ca. 979-1009, AR dirham (1.36g), NM, ND, A-W455, obverse legend wanudin / ibn khazrun bin / amir al-mu'minin (first two lines boldly legible, third line unclear, reverse legend largely off flan, possibly a reference to the Spanish Umayyads; first known coin in the name of Wanudin, unique, strong VF, RRRR. Wanudin achieved independence at Sijilmasa in AH390 (1000 AD), after which this piece was struck. However, gold coins struck after AH390 during his reign cite only the Spanish Umayyad caliph Hisham (then the caliph Sulayman in AH402), perhaps because Sijilmasa was an important trade center along the gold route from the South Sahara to Spain. Gold coinage in the name of a Khazrunid ruler began after the accession of Mas'ud II in AH417.
