Khorezm (later Khiva), a historical region centered around the reaches and delta of the Amu Darya River, was once a great kingdom under the names of Chorasmia and Khwarazm (Khorezm, Khorazm, Khwarizm, Khwarezm) with the capital town Gurganj (Jurjaniya, Urgench); since the late 16th century and until 1763 CE it was devoid of its own dynasty, the real power during the Tuqatimurid period staying with the Inaq Biys, leaders and military chieftains of Qongirat, an Uzbek tribe ascending to the Mongols. In 1740 CE Shibanid Khiva and neighboring (Janid) Bukhara were occupied until 1747 CE by the Afsharid (Iranian) invader Nadir Shah (rulad as king 1735-1747 CE). In 1804 CE, Inaq Eltuzar declared himself khan. Under Allah Quli (1825-1842 CE) the khanate readched its maximum size, absorbing, besides Khorezm proper, also lower Syrdaria (Syrdarya) and the larger part of Turkmenistan. In 1873 CE the Khanate of Khiva, considerably reduced in area, came under the protectorate of Russia and maintained that status until 1917 CE. In 1920 CE, after a brief period of regained independence, the khanate was abolished and replaced by the Khorezm People's Soviet Republic.
