KHWARIZMSHAH: Muhammad, 1200-1220, AE broad dirham (4.17g), Tirmidh, AH617, A-A1724, with bow-and-arrow in obverse center, word qirar above obverse field, Extremely Fine, RR. AH617 was the year in which the Mongols overtook Tirmidh from the Khwarizmshahs. Jim Farr has suggested that the bow-and-arrow was added to this type either to indicate that the city population was willing to surrender to the Mongols, if necessary, or that the Khwarizmshah government added the bow & arrow to warn the population of the Mongol approach.
