KIRIN: Kuang Hsu, 1875-1908, AR tael (35.24g), ND (1885), Kann-915 variety, the Manchu script on this example is barbarously written, the Chinese characters differ in style as well from the example published by Kann and in our opinion this is likely a fantasy issue produced in the mid-20th century, still rare and desirable, Extremely Fine, ex. The Irving Goodman Collection of Chinese Coinage, Superior Galleries, June 4, 1991, lot 1529. Sold in the Goodman sale as "gold plated" which was incorrect. The coin was conserved and all remnants of the gold surfaces have been removed. This very example sold for $2500 in the 1991 Goodman sale.
