IMPORTANT NOTE - The Buyer's Premium is now $20 per lot or 20% of the hammer price, whichever amount is greater. However, we have also reduced opening bids on lower value items to adjust for the new Buyer's Premium structure, so all-in costs are still very close to what they were in the past. This change in fee structure will allow us to continue to offer coins valued at less than $100 in addition to our higher value offerings. Contact us with any questions.
KOREA: Kuang Mu, 1897-1907, 5 chon, year 6 (1902), KM-1122, Russian Influence series, one year type struck at the Yongsan mint, PCGS graded EF40. Between 1898 and 1905, Russia actively pursued its imperialistic ambitions in Korea, aiming to expand its dominance and secure strategic gains in the region. The design of this one-year type shows that influence with a Russian style eagle with eight Korean taegukgi and trigrams on the wings representing water, heaven, thunder, wind, mountain, earth, lake, and fire and a central taegeuk at center. Russia's defeat in the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-05 ended its designs on the Korean Peninsula. This has always been a popular issue in Korean numismatics and scarce in any condition.Minting equipment from the Incheon mint was moved to Yongsan in September of the year 1900 and cupronickel coins at this time were struck in small quantities. The Korean government, under pressure, signed a treaty recognizing Japanese protection on February 23, 1904. The Yongsan mint would close in November 1904 after the Japanese occupation began.
